SeaGuardian® Iodine Hydrotest Solution
A marine-safe, long-duration preservation blend formulated for hydrotesting and lay-up protection of subsea and topside piping systems.
Product Overview
SeaGuardian® Iodine Hydrotest Solution is a marine-safe, long-duration preservation blend formulated for hydrotesting and lay-up protection of subsea and topside piping systems. It combines a slow-release iodine biocide, a high-efficiency oxygen scavenger, and a robust corrosion inhibitor to deliver stable protection over extended durations. The inclusion of a fluorescent dye assists with leak detection and visual tracking. When dosed at 500 ppm, SeaGuardian® Iodine Hydrotest Solution provides effective microbial, oxidation, and corrosion control for up to 24 months in clean, closed hydrotest systems.
This formulation is specifically engineered to take advantage of iodine’s biocidal properties while ensuring superior subsea environmental compatibility. Unlike commonly used alternatives, the iodine complex in this product is stabilized and released in a controlled manner, significantly reducing environmental impact upon dilution and discharge into the marine environment.
Environmental Comparison to Quaternary Ammonium Biocides
Compared to typical quaternary ammonium biocides (QACs) currently used for long-term hydrotest preservation, SeaGuardian® Iodine Hydrotest offers significantly reduced environmental toxicity.
QACs exhibit LC50 values in the range of 0.01–0.1 mg/L for sensitive aquatic species (algae, invertebrates), with high persistence and bioaccumulation potential.
SeaGuardian® iodine-based system (PVP-Iodine) has LC50 values typically >1 mg/L and degrades rapidly to iodide/iodate forms naturally present in seawater.
Iodine systems show low environmental persistence and minimal impact on marine microbial and planktonic populations.
Estimated Environmental Impact Reduction
SeaGuardian® Iodine Hydrotest is expected to reduce marine aquatic toxicity by 90+% compared to equivalent QAC-based biocides over the same comparative chemical strength preservation period. This profile supports improved compliance with CEFAS, CHARM, and MARPOL discharge regulations and reduces long-term ecological burden during subsea discharge of hydrotest fluids.
