DecomClear® SLUDGE SOFT
A water-based additive concentrate designed to soften and mobilize hydrocarbon sludge in crude oil or similar storage tanks.
Product Overview
DecomClear® SLUDGE SOFT is a water-based additive concentrate designed to soften and mobilize hydrocarbon sludge in crude oil or similar storage tanks. The product is used in passive soak applications where no internal agitation is available. It penetrates and emulsifies sludge layers up to 30 cm thick over a prolonged soak period. Once softened, the sludge can be dislodged by high-pressure water jetting and removed via sump or vacuum systems.
It is specifically designed for tanks where hydrocarbon cutters are not available or not able to be used due to tank condition or service certification.
Treated Sludge Density Performance
DecomClear® SLUDGE SOFT has been designed to break down dense, waxy hydrocarbon sludge into a fluid state. The following density changes can be expected under typical application conditions:
Condition: Untreated sludge
Density (kg/m³): 1,000–1,400
Notes: Waxy/asphaltene-rich tank bottoms
Condition: Post DecomClear soak (10–20%)
Density (kg/m³): 800–950
Notes: Viscous, semi-fluid emulsion
Condition: Post water blasting
Density (kg/m³): 700–850
Notes: Pumpable, fluid state
Application Methods
Field Dilution: DecomClear® SLUDGE SOFT is diluted with water at a ratio of 10–20% v/v depending on sludge thickness and soaking time.
Recommended Dilution Rates
Application: Heavy sludge (30+ cm)
Dilution: 20% v/v
Typical Soak Time: 1–2 months
Application: Standard (20–30 cm)
Dilution:15% v/v
Typical Soak Time: 2–3 months
Application: Light sludge (<20 cm)
Dilution: 10% v/v
Typical Soak Time: 3+ months
Properties
-
Top spray: Apply over sludge surface and allow to soak for 1–3 months.
-
Flood fill: Flood tank base with diluted solution.
-
Jetting rinse: Use water blasting post-soak to displace and mobilise residue
Compatability with Waste Oil recycling
The softened sludge treated with DecomClear® SLUDGE SOFT remains suitable for recovery and recycling via standard waste oil processing systems. The formulation is free of toxic or persistent components and will not adversely affect oil re-refining.
-
Treated sludge contains only 10–20% water-based additive
-
Post-treatment emulsions can be separated using heat, settling, or demulsifiers
-
Resulting oil phase is typically 60–80% recoverable
-
Inorganic solids can be filtered or allowed to settle before oil recovery
Key Benefits
-
Non-flammable and biodegradable.
-
Safe for use in confined space with proper precautions
-
Emulsifies and lifts waxes, asphaltenes and resins.
-
Compatible with steel tank materials
-
No heat required – works at ambient temperatures
