Problem
Numerous natural substances contain radioactive elements known as radionuclides. The Earth's crust itself emits radioactivity. Although individual exposure levels are often minimal, certain conditions can elevate concentrations of these radionuclides to levels that require regulatory attention.
Key sectors facing challenges with NORM are the petroleum and mining industries. Formation waters and slurries in these industries can be heavily mineralized and contain significant radium isotopes—RA 226 from Uranium 238 decay, and RA 224 and RA 228 from Thorium decay.
These isotopes nearly typically form as a sulphate or carbonate scale on equipment surfaces such as wells, flowlines, manifolds, tubulars, vessels, pumps, valves, piping and separators, reaching concentrations beyond 10,000 Bq/g. The decay products of these radium isotopes emit gamma radiation, which can penetrate equipment walls and emit high-energy photons, leading to significant external dose rates over time if scale builds up.
Historically, the removal of these deposits has been attempted with high-pressure (HP) and ultra-high-pressure (UHP) water blasting. This method can be effective for accessible surfaces but often proves unreliable and inconsistent for confined or complex flow paths, also generating hard-to-manage waste. When that happens, a new plan is needed.

DecomClear® NORM STRIP is specifically designed to dissolve sulphate and carbonate scales while safeguarding your equipment. The NORM is normally bound in the scale so removal of the cale in turn removes the NORM into the treatment solution.
Free from chlorides, it is perfectly safe for use on sensitive stainless-steel metallurgy.

Tailored Dilution Options: Depending on the severity of fouling, DecomClear® NORM STRIP can be utilized at full strength for maximum potency or diluted to 1% to 10% by volume with water.
