Problem
The increasing occurrences of NORM contaminated equipment from oil & gas processing, mining, and other related industries are bringing lots of new cleaning challenges in normal operations and decommissioning.
These industries deal with deep rock formation origin products where numerous natural substances contain radioactive elements known as radionuclides. The Earth's crust itself emits radioactivity. As processing equipment ages the NORM levels can accumulate above safe levels of handling.
These isotopes are found in the water produced during oil and gas extraction and can deposit directly into the grain structure of the carrying substrate equipment surfaces such as wells, flowlines, manifolds, tubulars, vessels, pumps, valves, and separators, reaching concentrations beyond 10,000 Bq/g. The decay products of these radium isotopes emit gamma radiation, which can penetrate equipment walls and emit high-energy photons, leading to significant external dose rates over time.
Regulation, monitoring and discovery of NORM has significantly increased in the last decade and simply storing affected equipment is no longer a long-term option - new technology is now required to deal with the problem.
UHP cleaning of embedded grain structure NORM is very ineffective, and another solution is required to coax the problem NORM material out.

Execution
Flexible Application for Various Needs: DecomClear® NORM BIND can be easily integrated into common chemical cleaning methodologies.

Circulation – can be added to water and circulated through systems for varying periods depending on severity and bonding of scale.

Tank soak – can be used in treatment baths at varying concentrations depending on severity and at varying temperatures depending on urgency.

Vapour Phase – this application is mostly for NORM scale issues but can be effective in some instances where grain embedded NORM is found.
Application
Results in Australia to date have shown that a dilution of 10% in water and circulating temperature of 50 to 70 Degrees C is the most efficient and effective combination.
Solution must be pH adjusted to precisely fall between 11.5 and 12.5 value. Potassium Hydroxide has also proven to be the optimal product for pH adjustment.
In degassing scenarios, a minimal yet potent dosage of 0.25 to 0.50% relative to the steam flow can achieve desired outcomes.
